Roy Scheider (1932-2008)

CELEBRITY DEATH TOLL UPDATE...

ROY SCHEIDER!

Famous for: Playing Chief Brody in Steven Spielberg's classic Jaws, the first summer blockbuster.  He reprised the role in Jeannot Szwarc's Jaws 2 (for which he had to turn down the De Niro role in The Deer Hunter).

Okay, when you've done a film with as much impact as Jaws, it's easy for people to forget almost everything else you've done, but Roy Scheider's other work is hardly forgettable.  He was one of the bigger stars of the '70s, nominated twice for an Oscar: for The French Connection (Best Supporting Actor) and All That Jazz (Best Actor).  And let's not forget Blue Thunder, the best military-surveillance-turned-police-super-helicopter movie ever (later adapted into a sub-Airwolf TV series).

Ironically enough, his best-known recent work would have to be the TV series seaQuest DSV.  You know, the show with the talking dolphin and ladybug.  The executive producer?  One Steven Spielberg.

Cause of death: I want to say "died bravely at sea, at the hands of a giant shark jellyfish" (the shark thing's kind of old), just because it would be fitting and cool, but according to his wife, it was complications from a staph infection.

Nurmi also made a few movie roles, her most famous being a mute zombie in Ed Wood's Plan 9 From Outer Space. She was played by Lisa Maria in Tim Burton's Ed Wood.

Cause of death: Natural causes. Read: her liver just couldn't take the strain of that girdle anymore.

Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel (1938 - 2007)

CELEBRITY DEATH TOLL UPDATE!

EVEL KNIEVEL!

Famous For: Being probably the most famous and recognizable daredevil (not counting Matt Murdock). Jumping over anything that he could think of in his bike, including (but not limited to) sharks, rivers, vehicles, buildings or any combination of those things. His signature red, white and blue costume has inspired kids everywhere (including Bart Simpson) to break their bones with the aid of bikes and other vehicles for decades. Also, the only person in this universe called "Evel" without actually being evil.
Cause of Death: I don't care what the official cause is, we all know he drove his bike one last time into the horizon, right into a ramp, up up and down down into the middle of the Grand Canyon. But the news says he had been suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis.

CELEBRITY DEATH TOLL UPDATE

Madeleine L'Engle!

Famous for:
writing a lot of super-Christian fantasy books, her most famous being the Newbery Medal-winning "A Wrinkle In Time." My personal favorite is "Many Waters," where some twins teleport to the events of Noah's Ark, only the people are all midgets and they ride around on unicorns.

Cause of death: Natural causes. I guess she just didn't want to l'engle around much longer.
